Raptor Room

I had a crazy day today. Luckily, unlike yesterday, I received ample direction from my sponsor and I knew clearly what I had to do. I checked the assignment board and I was set to work in the Raptor Room. This is where all the adult mammals and adult birds that aren't outside are kept. This includes a Red Shouldered Hawk and a baby owl, among other things. My job was to clean all the cages, help move the animals, and help weigh and feed them. This is easier said than done.

The reality of it was, these birds did not necessarily want to be handled. Now I was not the one actually picking up the birds because it is too dangerous for someone inexperienced with birds like me, but I even had a hard time helping to get them weighed. The Red Shoulder Hawk was particularly difficult. He got loose and was swooping down, talons bared. We finally were able to wrangle him but I'm sure I saw my life flash before my eyes.

After I was done in the Raptor Room, I was able to make all the diets for the animals. This was very fun and I learned a lot about what these animals eat.

Lastly, I helped in the Nursery and was able to feed and clean some of the most adorable baby animals.

Today was very busy, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and I learned a lot, once again.
